Wales and the Channel Islands

Wales appears on some itineraries through Holyhead on the island of Anglesey, a gateway to Snowdonia and the castles of North Wales. A few voyages call at other Welsh harbors.

The Channel Islands, which are British Crown Dependencies close to the French coast, add a distinctive day. St Peter Port on Guernsey is the most common call; ships anchor and tender guests into a harbor town of narrow lanes and gardens. Jersey’s St Helier appears less often. Both make an easy, relaxed stop between the busy ports of England and France.

Cotswolds stone cottages
Some tours from southern English ports reach the Cotswolds.

Itinerary Questions

How long is a British Isles cruise?

Most run 10 to 14 nights. Shorter voyages of about a week usually cover only part of the islands, such as Ireland and the west of Scotland, while longer ones may add Iceland, Norway or northern France.

Do British Isles cruises include France?

Many do. Le Havre, for Paris and Normandy, is a common call at the start or end of voyages from Southampton, and some itineraries call in Cherbourg or Zeebrugge for Bruges.

Is it better to dock or tender?

Docking is simpler and more reliable. Tender ports involve a short boat ride and can be cancelled in rough weather. If one port is the main reason for your trip, check whether the ship docks there.
